Visa options for Hong Kong migrants

New visa arrangements for Hong Kong migrants

Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has announced new visa arrangements for Hong Kong passport holders in July 2020, in response to Hong Kong's national security laws recently introduced by the China Government.

Opportunities for Hong Kong residents studying in Australia

​

Student visa holders will be eligible for a five year graduate visa from the completion of their studies with a pathway to permanent residency. Current temporary graduate visa holders will be offered an additional five years of work rights in Australia on top of the time they have already been in Australia with a pathway to permanent residency. 

​

Existing arrangements will continue to apply for those applicants who study in regional areas to help address skills shortage in those areas with pathways to permanent residency after 3 years.

Opportunities for Hong Kong residents working in Australia

​

Current temporary skill shortage visa holders from Hong Kong will be eligible for an extension of five years in addition to the time they have already been in Australia with a pathway to permanent residency.

Future Hong Kong applicants for temporary skill shortage visa will be eligible for a five year visa and a pathway to permanent residency. They are subject to the current visa application requirements.

Opportunities for Hong Kong residents doing businesses in Australia

​

The Government will prioritise Hong Kong business innovation and investment visa applicants. New incentives will be developed to attract export oriented based businesses and regional headquarters in Hong Kong to relocate to Australia.
